Is JVA Right for Me?

Becoming a JVA Family

Take a Tour of Jeffco Schoology!

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS

We expect regular attendance because it is a major contributor to success in school and it's a critical component to lifelong learning & career preparation.  JVA believes that attendance is more than just logging in.  Therefore, we gauge attendance based on grades and actually turning in work in classes.  We believe that assessing attendance based on actual learning and progress is an authentic measure that teaches students the value of making meaningful contributions in their classes.

Students are expected to:

  • Abide by all attendance policies
    • TAG & Middle School students attend JVA on their 1 required day each week (TAG Tuesday & Wednesday Middle School)
  • Commit an average of 5-7 hours a week per course
  • Review updates, grades and due dates in each class daily
  • Read and respond to all calls, texts, emails and Schoology messages daily - you'll receive communication from teachers, community liaisons, counselors and the school regularly
  • Complete coursework (lessons, assignments, etc.) regularly during a time of their choice - courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Create a schedule and stick to it
  • Follow Jeffco Code of Conduct
  • Contact us with questions - don't wait!

Students also have the option to:

  • Attend Back to School Night, in-person or online Conferences
  • Join Student Council to help plan school events and advocate for the student body
  • Participate in field trips, school events, credit earning opportunities, etc.

Remember to stay organized, create routines and stick to your schedule!  We may be online, but we're still a school and good learning practices are essential for success.

EXPECTATIONS OF FAMILIES
Families are never expected to do the teaching.  While many of our students learn from home, this isn't the same as home school.  Our teachers design lessons in the online learning environment they create while families and students determine the physical environment.  So, families don't teach, but provide consistent positive support.

Here are some examples:

  • Ask your student to teach you about what they're learning on a regular basis
  • Log into your parent accounts to monitor attendance and grades weekly
  • Call in excused absences
  • Communicate with JVA staff, as needed
  • Check for communications from JVA daily
  • Advocate for your student
  • Submit Pre-Arranged Absence Form when you know of an absence ahead of time
    • Attend Back to School Night, in-person or online Conferences
    • Chaperone school events
    • Contact us with questions - don't wait!

    EXPECTATIONS OF JVA
With the exception of the welcoming faces you'll see in the office, our staff works from JVA one day a week and schedules their other 8 hour days between 7am and 10pm Monday through Friday to best serve and support students.  Our office staff, Counselors, Learning Specialists, School Psychologist, Technology Coordinator, Instructional Coach, TAG Coordinator, Community Liaisions strive to support students, families and teachers to enhance their learning experience.  We're about breaking down the traditional barriers that keep students from meeting their full potential.

Our Teachers do countless things to engage students in learning. Here are some examples:

    • Create and clearly post syllabus, late work policies, grading policies, contact information, student expectations, etc.
    • Provide students feedback on assignments, as needed
    • Take attendance and post grades every Thursday
    • Check and respond to emails, voicemails, texts and messages within a 24-hour period
    • Use a variety of teaching methodologies in your classroom to meet the needs of all learning types
    • Proctor state and district tests
